The spiritual path.

To be on the spiritual path means to surrender the focus on the results of life, and instead focus on the effort, intention, courage, persistence, and perseverance behind your actions, writes Hawkins. The main spiritual principle is therefore to focus more on the road than the destination, since results also depends on external factors and are therefore not in your sphere of influence. The effort behind something is on the other hand completely up to you.

To focus on the effort and intention rather than the results intensifies the dedication and commitment to your daily challenges. In the spiritual realm, whether an outcome is desirable or not depends on the context rather than content such as material gain or social status. What will contribute most to a higher goal becomes more important than what can be obtained materialistically.

When the focus is the intention behind actions this avoids self-attacking thought-patterns and pride over what has been achieved or gained. Therefore, the spiritual seeker becomes more and more non-resistant and non-attached to «outcomes», and this relieves unnecessary tension and frustration. This does not mean that one becomes ignorant of worldly matters or that one lives in denial, but that one gradually becomes the observer of events rather than frantically trying to control events or other people. One becomes emotionally uninvolved yet capable of participation, and that reduces the temptation to invest in positionalities, results, or outcomes.

Naively many spiritual seekers believe that they will magically transform their state of mind into a childlike happiness where they will have no stress or problems, states Hemon. Though the shift from below integrity to above it marks an enhanced subjective experience of happiness, what is increasingly developing in the spiritual seeker is a calm contentment and an acceptance towards all of life. Daily challenges still persists, but they no longer continue to be wrapped around the intense emotional drama it used to be since one no longer attaches to any given outcome.

The spiritual path depends most of all on self-honesty. How honestly you have devoted yourself to working on your spiritual progress becomes more important than rules, techniques, or the exact amount of time dedicated to spiritual work. Only you know if you have given your spiritual work your best or not.

To trust the unconscious.

According to Hemon most people are driven by the fear-desire loop, and that makes them believe that fear is a «good thing» and a compass they can trust. In essence they’re fear-worshippers, and they believe that if it wasn’t for fear guiding them they would do something crazy or stupid. They think that something must keep their spontaneity in check and that they must constantly make sure they’re not in danger, or else bad things will happen. Therefore they cling to their fear and reinforce it. But fear doesn’t keep you safe, it only keeps you afraid. Caution is wise, but fear is unwise because it’s emotional, and those animal-ego emotions block higher levels of consciousness and evolved discernment.

When a person constantly worries and ruminates he doesn’t trust his own unconscious. This lack of trust (i.e. the belief that not worrying about what you do or say will lead to something stupid) is what keeps people in a perpetual state of fear. But it’s not necessary to fear in order to be safe, you only have to align with your intention and be present to life while its emotional truth unfolds in this very moment. You don’t have to look both ways before you cross the street because you fear for your life. Instead you may look both ways before you cross the street because out of love for your life you act with caution. Love has a lot more energy than fear, and is ultimately what leads to happiness and a fulfilled life.

Most people are so preoccupied inside their heads worrying and listening to their ego-chatter that they’re not paying attention to life as it’s unfolding. Trusting the unconscious only has to do with accepting reality. You already trust your stomach to unconsciously digest your food, so why not go one step further and trust your feelings to find certainty within yourself?

In order to evolve spiritually you need to trust that the unconscious is guiding you. A spiritual seeker knows that it’s the spirit that energizes the body and gives it life. He knows that one either serves the ego or one serves the observer (i.e. the unconscious spirit), and that there is no in-between. It’s scary to be lead by an unknown and unseen power, but still it needs to be done if one is to evolve on the spiritual path.
